Man, I really wanna jump into the Artist Army back on CS because I really want a positive environment to give and get critique in but…. damn it, I’m just not nice enough. Everyone in the army always has something nice to say, from what I’ve seen, even when the drawing they’re commenting on needs a lot of work. Many of the drawing’s main problems are glossed over [and sometimes even brought up in a positive light??] and people only comment one or two things like “the hind legs look a bit off”. And everyone’s rlly nice and cautious in general and just fbdsjhf. I don’t wanna go in there and make things all sour.
And just… I don’t bash god no, but I’m brutally honest and I don’t throw around compliments just for the sake of “softening the blow” and I sometimes go into stuff pretty extensively, so I don’t think my critique would be very welcomed. Idk, maybe I’m just underestimating the folks over there since by now I’ve adopted the mentality of “pre-teen to early teen unless proven otherwise” for CS, and I might be wrong about them not being able to take critique but… guh, I’m still wary. Would really like to join again tho, sigh.
The thing is is that we have a lot of really young people or beginner artists, people that already doubt their artistic ability A LOT already. The last thing they need is brutal honesty because they’ll probably stop completely because they don’t feel like they can do anything right. You have to be able to guide them which is different from critiquing them. You kinda have to go “nono more like this not like this; but you have potential in this area here”
That, and they don’t know how to take crit’ probably. A lot of them will start defending themselves and some people giving crit’ don’t know when to stop or realize somethings are just artistic liberty. The whole thing can spiral into drama really really easy when both sides don’t know how to act properly. (It doesn’t help that some of the better artists on there probably feel like they shouldn’t be questioned because they think they know whats best???)
Some of the more capable artists would probably appreciate a harsher crit’ though.
But yeah i’ve had the habit of saying “___ looks off” because I know looking at it that it isnt right but I don’t have the experience to tell them exactly what it is. LMFAO
but yes come join us it will be fun uwu It seems to be getting more popular again so hopefully it will pick up.
